100 Hours

…of sense-making and dissonance. Visualizing a new horizon of time while questioning the interaction of color and negative space through organic forms in rigid structure.

Theme: Sensemaking

As humans, we have a natural tendency to create order, even though life is generally random and chaotic. I wanted this piece to speak to the sensemaking and dichotomy of our daily lives, so I arranged the organic shapes in a rigid grid.

Theme: Dissonance

The negative space on each piece of paper symbolizes dissonance. The dissonance between expectation and reality permeates our lives and influences the way we interpret our experiences. In this piece, the paper is our expectation and the color is the reality that floods in, while the absence of color indicates the dissonance between the two, the contrast.

Next Steps

At the completion of this project, I had a dozen or so cups of watered-down paint that I wanted to find a use for. In tandem, I had a pile of paper towels that I used throughout the process to soak up excess paint. I was inspired me to soak these paper towels in the remaining cups of paint to be used as the medium for my next exploration. You can find the final piece inspired by the byproduct of this project here.
